In the late 1990s, several incidents of crime against women stoked public fury in Taiwan. In response to the social pressure, the Foundation for Women’s Rights Promotion and Development was established in 1999 to serve as a bridge for constructive dialogue between the government and civil society, as well as a hub for resource sharing and information exchange to empower women in Taiwan. We envision a society of gender equality in which inclusive and just policies are formulated through open communication and democratic participation. During the 2000s, being a dialogue bridge and a resource center on women’s rights and gender equality, the FWPPD facilitated the "Dialogue Platform on Women’s Rights Issues", which directed government resource to women and civil society organizations in all counties and stimulated extensive discussions on issues pertaining the lives of women and girls. Then the conclusions drawn from these discussions were given back to the government agencies to be considered in the policy-making process. On the other hand, the Foundation established the connection between international and domestic communities on gender equality by advocating global gender agendas such as gender mainstreaming and CEDAW and assisting the government agencies to implement these agendas in Taiwan, as well as supporting grassroots women organizations to share their good practices in annual NGO CSW Forums. In recent years, along with women organizations around Taiwan, the FWPPD stays dedicated to advocating for the government to accelerate equality process, as well as driving civil society’s participation on long-lasting and emerging inequality issues. We focus on women’s leadership at the grassroots level, opportunities and challenges on gender equality posed by digital technology, and women’s roles in tackling environment problems and climate crisis. We believe that the solution to these difficulties will be achieved through collective actions.
